The Speaker Protection Board — And What It Actually Protects

Setting DC Offset and Bias on an Ayre V-3 After an Output-Stage Repair

Part two of the V-3 rebuild. Part one covered the shorted output MOSFETs, the discontinued IRCP064, and matching the IRFP064 and RFG60P06E substitutes. This one covers the part I promised to split out: actually setting the amp up afterward.

Replacing output transistors in a V-3 is only half the job. The other half is bringing the amp back into alignment — DC offset at the speaker posts and idle current through the output stage — and in this amplifier those two adjustments fight each other. You don’t set one and then the other. You walk them in together, over hours.

Rebuilding the Output Stage of an Ayre V-3 with Substitute MOSFETs

This is my second Ayre V-3 on the bench. The first one was easy — a cracked solder joint, reflow, done. This one was not.

The fault

The amp came in dead on one channel. Probing the output stage turned up two of the four output MOSFETs shorted. Normally that is a desolder-and-solder afternoon: pull the bad devices, drop in replacements, reset bias, ship it.

Micsig DP10013 High Voltage Differential Probe — a bench review

That scuffed black brick in the photo above is mine. The wooden bench under it has seen flux, solder splatter, three spilled coffees and at least one capacitor that decided to become a confetti cannon. The probe itself still works perfectly, which tells you something: it has survived my workbench, and my workbench has not been kind to it.
